Limonade is a commune in the Nord department and the Cap-Haïtien arrondissement.

It is located 13 km from Cap-Haitien, 16 km from Caracol, and 52 km from Dajabon. It is bordered to the North by the sea, to the West by the municipality of Quartier-Morin, to the East by the municipalities of Caracol and Trou du Nord, and to the South by the municipalities of Ste Suzanne and Grande Rivière du Nord.

It is one of the oldest cities in Haiti, a historic and tourist city rich in colonial remains, unexplored and untapped historical, archaeological, natural, and ethnological sites. Formerly called Puerto Real, it was founded in 1676 and elevated to the status of a commune in 1864.

Its population is estimated to be over 60,000 inhabitants (cf IHSI, 2016) spread across the city center, the 3 communal sections: 1st Basse-Plaine, 2nd Bois de l’Anse, and 3rd Roucou, and the Bord de Mer de Limonade neighborhood. A population that tends to increase due to the availability of electricity, the presence of the Caracol Industrial Park, and the Henri Christophe University Campus.

In Limonade, the climate is tropical. The municipality has great water and agricultural potential with still interesting vegetation cover despite deforestation issues.

The economy relies mainly on agriculture, livestock, small commerce, small businesses related to electrical energy, and small jobs at the Caracol Park. But we will never forget the contribution of the Welsh sugar factory, vandalized in 1994.

On the sociocultural and sports front, Limonade is rich in talents who are part of various groups that just need to be structured and guided in different fields: arts, soccer, volleyball, basketball, shotokan karate.

FEMINA MULTISPORTS has expanded the range of disciplines practiced by introducing judo, boxing, table tennis, gymnastics, and taekwondo.

On the educational level, Limonade operates at all levels: preschool, primary, secondary, and higher education, including vocational and university. Limonade is even considered a university town with the inauguration in 2012 of the Henry Christophe University Campus with national influence. Other university centers such as UNIC / International University of the Caribbean have also emerged.

Let us highlight the organization of various interschool academic activities, the creation of university-level groups, and especially the integration of youth into the world of astronomy through RANDEVOU and ACL/Astro Club de Limonade, both members of the SHA/Haitian Society of Astronomy, based at CLAC de Limonade.

In terms of healthcare, the population is served by certain public and private health infrastructures despite various shortcomings in medical-technical and administrative staff, materials, equipment, and medications. Given the growing demand for emergency and quality care, Limonade needs the construction and organization of a true hospital center that operates 24/7.

Limonade still faces quite a few challenges such as the availability and accessibility of drinking water outside of water treated by osmosis, waste management.

If we refer to the Communal Development Plan of Limonade (PCDL 2022-2027), several project perspectives and investment and financing programming have been considered in all areas related to development.
